Tips and FAQ

Here are some tips and answers to frequently asked questions.  To contact us about the website, send a message from the contact link in the navigation menu at the bottom of the page.

  • Registration:  Unfortunately, my current setup is unable to prevent a large portion of fake/robot users from attempting to register.  If you would like to register, send me a message using the contact form and I will create an account for you.  Include a username, email address, and your institution.
  • Consider the "Paste as plain text" or "Remove format" buttons when pasting text into a forum post.  This will help maintain consistent formatting in all browsers, even though it looks ok in your own.  It will avoid text that looks like this.
  • When pasting code, dataset models, or system output, consider using Courier New font, like this:

**** MINERAL DATA *****    from Holland and Powell (1998+)

forsterite           SI(1)MG(2)O(4)    fo            2nh
 ST              0.0   -2172200.000        95.1000         4.3660
 C3        233.30000      0.0014940      -603800.0      -1869.700           0.00
 VHP     0.000061300         1250.0         0.0000           0.00        0.00000
 VH2         10.0000         4.0000   -0.000187500
  • If you need the URL of a forum post, you can right-click the number that appears in the upper right corner of the post and copy the address.
  • I do not have an option to subscribe to all posts yet.  In lieu of such an option, go to the forums page and select "Subscribe" under each of the forum titles/descriptions.
  • To add an image to a forum post, you must store the image somewhere on the web and provide a link to it.  There are several tutorials on the web that explain how to do this, so search for one and follow the instructions.  One method is to use Dropbox, but there's a catch, so follow these instructions (modified from Ryan M):  (1) Put the image in your dropbox folder in a permanent location.  (2) Use "Share dropbox link" (right-click should provide the option) to copy the URL of the image.  (3) In the forum text editor, click the Image button and paste your URL into the text field.  (4) Change the portion of the URL that reads "" with "" and click OK.
  • carriage return in the text editor defaults to a line break.  Use shift+enter to make a paragraph break.
