Research-Talk.org Privacy Policy

November 11, 2018

This Privacy Policy outlines how research-talk.org uses the information it collects on this website. In the course of this policy, "we", "our", and "us" refer to research-talk.org, and “information”, “personal information”, “private information”, and “personal private information” refer to your name, email address, photo, and any other information that you submit or post to the website that can identify you.

Summary
We won't disclose your personal information to anybody, unless it's for legal purposes.  This site is a forum in which registered users can submit posts.  If you choose to post your personal information, it will be viewable by the public.  We recommend that you do not post your email address or other personal information on the forum.

Forum Registration
For the general public, registration is not necessary to view this website.  However, to be able to participate and post in our forum, you must submit a username, password, institution, and email address.  Submitting a photo is optional.

Your email address will be used to verify your membership, to send notifications of forum posts, and to contact you about the forum, but your email address is kept private from the public and other forum users.

To register, we ask you send a message using the contact form on the site.  In that message, we ask you to give your institution name so that we can attempt to verify that you are a person who is unlikely to use the site in a malicious way, such as a robot or spammer who wants to abuse the forum and its members.  The message you send is an email communication, and although we do not store your institution name on our site, be aware that your message is subject to typical privacy policies of email providers, such as Google’s Gmail product.

Forum User Information
Be aware that if you post personal information in the forum, the information can be seen, stored, or used by the public.  Likewise, if you share your personal information with other forum members, those members will be able to use the information without your control.  This may result in you receiving unsolicited messages and other forms of communication, depending on the information you shared.  We will not be responsible for information that you share or post in the forum.

Because the forum is viewable by the public, your username and, if submitted, your photo will be viewable by the public.

Legal Disclaimer
We reserve the right to disclose your personal information when legally required and when the information is relevant for the protection of our rights, including but not limited to compliance to a legal process or court order served to our website.

Log Files
Data that is usually made available by your web browser will be stored on the web server in log files.  This non-personal data may include browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of every page request.  Like most other sites, we collect this data to better understand how our visitors use our site, to be able to generate reports on the trends relevant to the usage of our site, to help with site administration, to analyze user activities on the site, and to learn about our user base in general. We do not link the data contained in these log files to your personal information and we will never distribute them to outside third parties.

Cookies and Web Beacons
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your computer. The file contains data and/or information that your browser provides to the website each time you return. Cookies are used for record keeping purposes.  A web beacon is a transparent graphical image that serves to monitor your interaction with a website. This, along with cookies and log files, provides us with analytical data that we can use to improve website performance and user experience in general.  An example is the ability to “remember” your login information so that you can visit the site and enter your login information less often. We do not link this data to personal information, nor do we give this data to outside third parties.

Managing Cookies
If you do not wish to enable cookies, simply adjust your browser settings and turn off cookies for research-talk.org.  Keep in mind, however, that disabling cookies may affect how our site will function for you (e.g. being unable to log in and post to the forum).  If you disable cookies and view the site without logging in, you will probably not see any problems.

Links to Other Sites
Our website contains links leading to other websites that are not owned or managed by us. Because we are not responsible for how these sites handle your privacy, we encourage you to learn the privacy policies of those other websites before giving them your personal information.

Third-Party Host
This site is hosted by name.com, which handles data processing and storage of all data passing through the server that is hosting research-talk.org.  As a hosting service, name.com’s privacy policy generally describes the privacy of research-talk.org’s administrator data, not data related to users of the research-talk.org forum.  Please see their privacy policy for a detailed description (https://www.name.com/privacy-policy).

We reserve the right to change this Privacy Policy as we deem necessary.  A notification will be posted on this page in that event.
